Outside Looking In

NEWFOUNDLAND: OUTSIDE LOOKING IN

I have had the pleasure of visiting ‘The Rock’ twice and have become entranced with the landscape and culture.  My first visit, in 2017, was with my husband and we travelled from St. John’s to L’Anse aux Meadows and back in one week, in May. Needless to say it was short, cold and nothing was open pretty much anywhere north of St. John’s. In L’Anse aux Meadows we were met with 12 foot snow banks and a B&B that had to be dug out.

I documented much of the flora and geology on this trip. Intimate, tight focus shots of lichen and rocks. I knew I had to come back to visit at least once more – when there was more open to visit and see than rocks, rocks, trees and rocks.

My second visit, in 2018, was with my mother and we stayed in St. John’s with her friends. While there, I enjoyed incredible east coast hospitality and entertainment. We visited Fogo Island, staying in a Salt Box House in Little Seldom. We spent time touring around St. John’s to Signal Hill, Cape Spear and Petty Harbour to name a few places. I continued with my flora and geology documentation. And naturally enough, more rocks, rocks, trees and rocks.

I admit there were times when I did not want to leave to come home.
