Fall Series 2020

In all my paintings and drawings, I explore the relationship between colour and form. In this series, Sam Lawrence Park, Fall 2020, I found an amazing source of imagery to explore. I never thought that landscape and flora would become a subject that I would enjoy painting. I start with photo documentation using my iPhone. I am not looking to create a ‘realistic’ landscape but capture the feeling of the space you are looking at. I will sometimes, distort the image using the editing programs on my iPad to crop, change lighting and re-colourize the image.  The photo image is the starting point and through intuitive embellishment, the work becomes both representational and very much abstracted.

In some images I focus narrowly on a small area and expand it to many times its original size.

I find it exciting to recreate the world using my own interpretation of the viewed space. Some works are splashes of colour, while others have some resemblance to the actual landscape. My main objective in my current work is to use my knowledge of colour theory and explore how colour and line work together to create vibrancy, agitation, and space.
